what do you call musicians like com truise? he seems easy enough to pin down—throw out some words like nostalgia, synth-wave, eighties, and electro-funk and you will scrape by—but to be truly insightful about his music is tough, because art that is so blatantly referencing certain things in a certain way while also making them weird and new and unique is confusing. how do you classify something that is so obviously both vintage and current but is too fun to call postmodern? awesome is an option. especially when it sounds like you are driving the knight rider car through thick clouds of nitrous oxide, like >fairlight<, the title track from truises new single, which previously appeared on an iso50 comp called dry waves and also has this jarring, falling-all-over-itself middle section that prevents you from trancing out too hard. >beta eyes<, the track that follows, is even more restless, with a drum pattern that is fidgety and clustered, kicks and snares fighting each other like two drum and bass heads arguing over an atari remote. >polyhurt<, a narcotic, almost ballad-like closer that inevitably leaves you thinking, >now, how the hell am i going to describe that to someone?< the vinyl exclusive cut >colorvision< could be truises most dancefloor friendly track yet.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

the a12 motorway was wrapped in complete darkness. the lights of the windmills were blinking in the rhythm of the rotor blades passing by. they appeared just before sunrise. no one had ever seen this kind of creature ever before: red flashing, and bright shining alien butterflies attracted by the windmills. people stopped, and got out of their cars to watch this spectacle. the flying creatures were constantly creating new, kaleidoscope-like formations, and slowly, and very softly at first, they started singing. and although nobody really understood their behaviour, everybody understood their wistful and hopeful song.

mr raoul k and baobab secret take the next step and put out new remixes of >le karantkatrieme peul<. prisme are a belgian duo (nicolas pepinster and yves theys) who started to produce their own material in 2010. they liked the title track so much that they remixed it and sent the result to mr raoul k who instantly fell in love with the melodic and laid back approach they took on it. this lush piece makes a perfect entry into a long night out, promising that every piece will fall into place. the other production crew featured on this release are the iklawa brothers (mzwandile nxasana and sandile magwaza) who run their own label in durban, south africa. they are big fans of mr raoul ks work and have been dropping his tunes in their sets on a regular basis. their remix is a dark, afrobeat driven tune that takes the listener on a long trip into a gloomy world full of surprising musical twists, dramatic changes of mood and impressing string sounds. the last remix is done by mr raoul k himself. he shows a new side of his musical skills. resulting in an epic track that seems to dance on tiptoes around a giant beast. one small step. hesitate. check carefully what happens. do not disturb. just watch in astonishment how it slowly awakes and stretches out to its full glory. a track that is full of hope, but reminds us to keep our feet to the ground to provide a solid stand.

his first, and arguably best album from the great rozenblit catalogue lovingly restored in its original format on limited lp, re-mastered from the original rozenblit master tapes. in 1968 tom ze moved from salvador, bahia to sao paulo where he hung out and wrote with his friends gilberto gil and caetano veloso. although initially part of the tropicalia movement, ze was extremely independent and determined to forge his own musical path. he started by recording grande liquidacao, a hyperactive pop album backed up by two incredible psychedelic rock bands: os brazoes and os versateis.

rather lightweight live album, only thirty four minutes long, three songs and some painful applause herding for an encore. the line-up is essentially the girls line-up, though john g. perry s been replaced by an also-excellent mike wedgwood. the production is clear but the mix misjudged: the admittedly nicely brought out bass sound dwarfs all other elements. in particular, pye hastings guitar is very low, the drums never seem to match the bass volume.

a side >under< from evol intent featuring vocals from singer/song writer jackie b. this dubstep track is dark, sexy, melodic, and poppy, with a bass riff and drums that encourages you to urgently to hit the dance floor, and shake your ass. the vocals are sexy and consistent. she reminds me of esthero in how she can make underground production sound so polished. yet she can take you places emotionally because she makes intelligent choices her vocal tonality. the production is dark, and sounds like a eerie episode of a twin peaks score. you will be hearing lots more music from her really soon. she is also a great producer as well. talented portugese duo johnwaynes have had a fruitful career so far with releases on labels like brique rouge and compost. now they appear on serenades, with this trippy and inspired vocal house track >never enough<. featuring the soulful vocal talents of stee downes, the irish amsterdam-based singer whose smooth tones can also be found on sonar kollektiv, the team have cooked up a real hit in the making with >never enough<. combining deep, sexy house vibes with an insistent, catchy vocal and expertly produced elements the track comes in two distinct versions. the original keeps things low down and dirty, wrapping up the story in a cool 8 minute version. melodious pianos and deep square bass come together in a glorious moment of underground pop house. the raw mix however pushes the story further with a more ravey vibe and extended tripped-out moments, yet keeps it deep and soulful with warm rhodes keys and plenty of atmosphere!
